Basic Body Maintenance

Good grooming is like gardening. My neighbors expand their beds year after year, adding trees, shrubs and posies that enhance the beauty of their yard, while I struggle to keep weeds at bay. Now I had to throw in costs for things like leotards and athletic shoes, battery-powered tape machines with wimpy little earphones and Jane Fonda tapes. In my late thirties, I got into vitamins and nutritional supplements. Over the years, my pill investments increased exponentially as I moved from a simple multivitamin with a little extra C on the side to things like Folic Acid, Selenium and Gingko Biloba. Finally, when things really started to fall apart, I had to pitch in for repairs — surgery to rebuild jawbones ravaged by gum disease that progressed no matter how many times a day I flossed — and Radial Keratomy to return my vision to the pre-glasses status of my twenties. We all sweat. Yep, even Little Miss Priss who reckons her you-know-what doesn't stink. Sweat is actually pretty important as it's our body's natural air-conditioner. You feel hot, you perspire; it's just how things work. When you hit puberty you start to sweat more, and it may also start to smell different. If you don't wash it off properly, things can get a little smelly. When sweat is released, it actually doesn't smell at all. Bacteria on your skin will start breaking down the sweat those whiff odors to emerge.

How to stop it

It's normal to sweat, but some people do perspire more than others. You'll never be able to totally stop yourself from sweating. Everyone perspires when they're hot, if they're exercising, if they're stresses or even a little nervous – these are everyday things that aren't going to change. Luckily, there are loads of things you can do to go from stinky to sweat-smelling in a hurry.

Take a daily shower

Sounds simple enough, but make sure you wash properly. Use a gentle soap or treat yourself to a yummy scented body wash. Focus on washing your armpits and genital area really well -these are the spots where lots of sweat glands are located. If it's a super-hot day, or you've been playing sport, go for two showers.

Change your clothes

After you've washed yourself, sticking a stinky old T-shirt over your clean body is a waste of time. Clothes get sweaty when you wear them and will start to smell, even if you're clean underneath. And clean undies every day are a must (although you already knew that). Cotton ones are best.

Got hairy pits?

Consider shaving or waxing them. Moisture can get caught up in the hairs under your arms, making the smell worse. It's also harder to wash away when there's lots of hair there.

Choose natural fibers

If you're super sweaty, opt for clothes made of natural fibers like cotton, linen or wool. Man-made fabrics like polyester and rayon don't breathe. They trap moisture next to your skin, especially if they're tight-fitting, making you feel damp, hot and smelly.

Use deodorant.

This is not optional! A deodorant will cover up suspicious smells, while an antiperspirant actually reduces sweating. You can get products that do both, which is the best option if you tend to get really sweaty. Body sprays are great for masking BO and helping you feel fresh, but don't rely on one to stop you from sweating (they're perfect for freshening up after PE, though).

Start from your insides

Did you know that what you can eat can actually end up coming out through your pores? This'll affect how you smell. Keep your body healthy by feeding it lots or fresh fruit and veggies. It's also H2O intake. The more you sweat, the more dehydrated you'll get. If you don't drink enough water, not only will you feel tired and headachy, you'll also start to get stinker. Drink lots of water to dilute the smell and you'll feel much better too – bonus!


Training for Body Type

Training to your body type has validity and it also has been around for decades. One thing I learned about this title is that regardless of body type, most people are going to train according to their personality and their mindset. I'M a perfect example of not training to match my body type. I tried it, I don't like and it does not feel normal for me.

Let me explain. I ran track in high school, I ran the 220, 440, and 880 at that time and was also good at basketball; very good at, and it came naturally. Football on the other hand did not. I had trouble running with pads on. I have long limbs for my height. According to "training to match body type" power-lifting and its associated training methods would be out of the question, not my body type. The contradiction is; it was perfect for me mentally.

While the strict method of power-lifting advocate's very low reps (1-5) reps most of the time, mentally and physically I responded best in the 6-10 rep range. I also gained greatly by incorporating Olympic style lifts into my training; 6-10 rep range again. Ironically, these lifts would not be the best for my body type.

If you notice the relationship between track and my style of lifting, you could describe the 100 YD dash as the very low rep range and the distances I ran would be that 6-10 rep range. More than that and I get bored and disinterested. I probably would have been better running the mile and over but mentally, it is not me and lifting according to my body type is not me.

Technically, what presumably would be best for my type would be higher reps (8-12 reps) and more toward a bodybuilding method. Psychologically that is not me. With awareness of your body type and knowledge of the sport you are training in, you can identify possible weaknesses while performing certain movements. With the knowledge, you can find those moves that allow you to overcome those weaknesses.

Those moves in this case will be those that suit your body type. The one overriding fact I have learned is that you will never really know what capacity and ability you have until you experiment and find what your body and mind respond best to. A few things to keep in mind before you run out worrying about your body type. "Body Type" is a bit ambiguous.

It should include your metabolism, muscle length, and your joints. These things are all part of "body type". That's why experimenting with what works best and keeping a journal are your best tools to work within your body type.

Step 2: No Soda. Cut Soda completely out of your life. Soda adds no nutritional value to your diet and is high in sugar, calories, and bad for your teeth! Try drinking fruit/vegetable drinks instead, they taste better and add nutritional value to your diet!

Step 3: Cook your own food. Food at many restaurants is packed with extra calories, fat and sodium to keep the food fresh for longer periods of time. Try cooking your own meals, limiting the amount of times you go out to eat. Also, you can give yourself smaller portions and save the leftovers for later.

Not only will you lose weight, you will keep your wallet fatter, because you will get more food for your buck!

Step 4: Drink more water. Water is great for your body. Try drinking at least 64 ounces a day. That is eight 8 ounce glasses of water. Amazingly, this will help you drop pounds and have more energy. Water intake cleans out your system and nourishes your body, leaving you feeling healthier and more refreshed.

Step 5: Find creative ways to be active. Park further away from work, walk upstairs to your office. These are just a couple ways to get more activity into your daily life. Find creative and fun ways to be active in daily living and you will not only feel better, you will look better!
